Evidence Based and Relational Counselling in Calgary and Cochrane for Adults

Why Context Matters in Therapy

I founded The Right Room on a simple belief: context is everything

The field of psychology in the Western world has long reflected the perspectives of a narrow group, often framing distress as something broken within the individual; while overlooking the realities of culture, oppression, and environment.

At The Right Room, I provide counselling in Cochrane and Calgary founded on the belief that therapy cannot ignore context. To do so is to risk reinforcing cycles of harm. Cultural norms, systemic inequities, neurodivergence, and lived identity all shape how we experience the world; and how the world responds to us.

This is why my work is both culturally responsive and neurodivergent affirming. It’s why I view therapy as deeply human and, yes, political. Because when therapy pretends to be “neutral,” it often ends up siding with the status quo.

Here, I choose differently. My aim is to create a space where your complexity, your identity, your gendered experience, your neurodivergence, and your story are not pathologized but honored. Because I know how much of psychology’s “history” has left out people like you: how theories assumed cisgender male normativity, how women’s voices were suppressed or sidelined, how many different lived experiences weren’t considered in what counted as “normal.” I place the authority of defining safety in your hands, including the recognition of all parts of who you are.

The name The Right Room is both a promise and a pursuit. It represents a commitment to continually deepening cultural competence and advocating for neurodivergent voices. We know this work is never “finished.”

Cultural humility and systemic awareness are practices, not achievements. Holding this vision is part of how I resist the status quo. My hope is that when you walk into The Right Room, you’ll feel it: that therapy here is different. That you’re not “too much.” That this is a place where you can lay it all down, and begin again.

In courage and care,

Meet Hannah Tan

Hi, I’m Hannah Tan, founder of The Right Room and a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) providing counselling in Calgary and Cochrane that is both evidence based and relational. I work with individual adults and couples who are ready to stop holding it all together alone.

Most of my clients describe themselves as the strong one, the reliable one, the person everyone turns to. On the outside, they’re composed and capable. Inside, they’re often running on empty, wondering when it became so hard to just be. My work is about helping people like you slow down, feel seen, and start living from a place of self-compassion instead of self-criticism.

My approach blends clinical depth with genuine warmth. You won’t find a blank slate or a distant professional here; you’ll find a real human who’s curious about your story, grounded in evidence-based practice, and deeply committed to helping you find your footing again. And yes, swearing is okay (and sometimes encouraged). So is laughing!

Whether we’re exploring identity, relationships, or the quieter parts of your inner world, therapy with me is a space where your complexity is welcome. You don’t have to shrink yourself to be understood here.
